Tragedy of the commons game

The Tragedy of the commons game brings to life the concept of common-pool resources and the tragedy of the commons in your classroom.

Students catch and sell fish, with the aim of maximising their profits. In the first round, students own their own private fisheries and are careful not to over-fish it, as this will affect their result.

However, in the second round, students must share the same ocean -- a public good. Watch as the market fails to produce the most efficient outcome!
